Living in Huntington Beach: What It's Really Like to Call Surf City Home

People around the world know Huntington Beach for the surf, the pier and miles of coastline.

But living in Huntington Beach is a little different from visiting for the weekend.

I was born and raised here, and to me, Huntington Beach has always been much more than a beach town. It's morning walks, neighborhood parks, boating in Huntington Harbour, grabbing coffee before work, riding bikes to the beach, running into someone you know at the grocery store and planning your day around whether the marine layer is going to burn off.

If you're thinking about moving to Huntington Beach, here's what I think you should actually know about living in Surf City.

Yes, the Beach Really Does Become Part of Your Life

When you live in Huntington Beach, the ocean isn't something you have to plan a vacation around.

It's just... there.

You can ride your bike down for sunset, walk the beach in the morning, take the dog out, surf before work or meet friends near the pier for dinner. If you want a head start on the best evening spots, here are my favorite places to watch the sunset in Huntington Beach.

And one of my favorite things about living here is that you don't have to be a surfer to embrace the Surf City lifestyle.

Sometimes it's simply knowing you can be standing with your feet in the sand a few minutes after deciding you need a beach walk.

Huntington Beach Is Much More Than Downtown

When someone first starts looking at homes in Huntington Beach, they often picture the pier, Main Street and Downtown.

That's definitely part of HB — but it's only one part.

Different Huntington Beach neighborhoods offer completely different lifestyles.

Huntington Harbour

Huntington Harbour is its own little world.

If boating is part of your lifestyle, this is an area you'll want to explore. You'll see people kayaking, paddleboarding and cruising the channels in Duffys throughout the year.

For me, this part of Huntington Beach is especially personal. I grew up in Huntington Harbour, so it's an area I know beyond simply knowing the real estate. I wrote more about it in my Living in Huntington Harbour neighborhood guide.

Downtown Huntington Beach

If being able to walk or bike to the beach, restaurants and coffee shops is high on your wish list, Downtown Huntington Beach is worth exploring.

You've got the Huntington Beach Pier, Main Street, Pacific City and the beach all right there.

There's energy, activity and that classic Surf City atmosphere people imagine when they think of Huntington Beach. It's also where I send people first when they ask about brunch and where locals actually eat.

Central Huntington Beach

Move farther inland and Huntington Beach starts feeling very different.

You'll find established residential neighborhoods, larger parks and quieter streets while still being just a bike ride or short drive from the coast.

Huntington Central Park is a huge part of this lifestyle, with walking trails, green space, the Central Library and plenty of places to spend time outside.

Bolsa Chica

The Bolsa Chica side of Huntington Beach gives you access to one of the things I think makes HB particularly special: we don't just have the ocean.

We also have wetlands and beautiful open space.

The Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve gives you a completely different side of coastal Huntington Beach and is one of my favorite reminders of how much variety we have here.

Your Weekend Can Feel Like a Vacation Without Leaving Home

This might be one of my favorite things about living in Huntington Beach.

A Saturday can look like:

• Coffee in the morning
• A walk along the beach
• Breakfast burritos
• A bike ride
• A few hours on the boat
• Friends over in the afternoon
• Dinner Downtown
• Sunset at the beach

And you never left Huntington Beach.

That's the lifestyle people are really buying when they move here.

Huntington Beach Has a Strong Local Culture

There are major events that put Huntington Beach on the map — like the US Open of Surfing — but there's also a much smaller community feel underneath all of that.

You have neighborhood traditions, local restaurants where you recognize people, community organizations, schools, youth sports, boating clubs, longtime local businesses and families who have lived here for generations.

That's the Huntington Beach I know.

The big events are fun.

But it's the everyday HB lifestyle that makes people stay.

You Don't Have to Live at the Beach to Have the Beach Lifestyle

This is something I think buyers sometimes overlook.

There are fantastic Huntington Beach neighborhoods that aren't directly along the coast.

Living farther inland can mean different lot sizes, different architectural styles, quieter streets, proximity to parks and a completely different neighborhood feel.

You're still in Huntington Beach.

The beach doesn't disappear because you aren't three blocks from the sand.

In fact, some people end up preferring the balance of a quieter residential neighborhood with the coast just a bike ride away.

Outdoor Living Is a Big Part of Huntington Beach

Obviously we have the beach, but that's only the beginning.

There's Huntington Central Park, Bolsa Chica, Huntington Harbour, neighborhood parks and miles of places to walk and bike.

That variety is one of the reasons I love living here.

One day you can be walking through the wetlands.

The next you're biking along the beach.

And that evening you can be cruising Huntington Harbour.

You don't have to leave town to completely change your scenery.

The Best Part of Living Here? The Little Things.

People searching online for what it's like to live in Huntington Beach usually find information about real estate, beaches and things to do.

All of that matters.

But I think the real answer is in the little things.

It's seeing the ocean when you're driving down PCH.

It's knowing which coffee shop you're stopping at before an early morning.

It's riding your bike instead of getting in the car.

It's taking visitors down to the pier even though you've walked it a hundred times.

It's knowing where to get a great breakfast burrito.

It's watching the sunset and still taking a picture of it even though you've lived here forever.

That's living in Huntington Beach.

Choose your lifestyle first. Then choose your house.

Do you want to walk to the beach?

Do you want a boat dock?

Do you want a larger backyard?

Do you want to be near Huntington Central Park?

Would you rather be close to Downtown or tucked into a quieter neighborhood?

Are you looking for Mid-Century architecture, newer construction, a waterfront property or a classic Huntington Beach home?
