Is Huntington Beach a Good Place to Live? A Lifelong Local’s Take
Is Huntington Beach a good place to live? A lifelong HB local shares what everyday life in Surf City is really like, from the beach and Harbour to neighborhoods, parks, local favorites and coastal living.

If you're thinking about moving to Huntington Beach, you've probably already done some Googling.
You've looked at the beach.
You've checked out homes.
You've probably seen the Huntington Beach Pier, Main Street and photos of surfers with palm trees in the background.
But eventually, there's a bigger question:
Is Huntington Beach actually a good place to live?
I may be a little biased.
I was born and raised in Huntington Beach, grew up in Huntington Harbour, and still call HB home today.
But that also means I know Huntington Beach beyond the postcard version.
So rather than give you another list of statistics, I want to tell you what I think it's actually like to live in Huntington Beach.
First: Huntington Beach Is Not Just a Beach Town
This is probably the biggest misconception I hear.
When people picture Huntington Beach, they often picture Downtown—the pier, Main Street, Pacific City, surfers and the beach.
That's absolutely part of Huntington Beach.
But it's not all of Huntington Beach.
Drive a few miles inland and you'll find quiet residential streets, established neighborhoods, parks and homes where you might not see the ocean from your front door—but you can still hop on a bike and be at the beach.
Head north and you have Huntington Harbour, Bolsa Chica and Sunset Beach.
Spend a morning around Huntington Central Park and it feels completely different again.
That's one of the things I love most about HB.
You can live in Huntington Beach without necessarily living the same Huntington Beach lifestyle as everyone else.
The Beach Really Does Change Your Lifestyle
I think there's a difference between loving the beach and living near the beach.
When you live here, going to the beach doesn't have to be an event.
You don't necessarily pack a cooler, load the car and plan an entire day.
Sometimes you just go.
You walk down after dinner.
Ride your bike along the coast.
Take the dog out in the morning.
Meet a friend for coffee and end up walking by the water.
Stop at the pier because the sunset looks particularly good.
The ocean becomes part of your normal life rather than somewhere you visit on vacation.
And I don't think that ever completely loses its magic.
Your Neighborhood Matters—a Lot
If you're considering buying a home in Huntington Beach, this is probably the most important thing I can tell you:
Don't choose your house before you choose your lifestyle.
Someone who dreams about walking to Main Street probably shouldn't be looking at the same neighborhoods as someone whose dream is having a boat dock behind their house.
Someone who wants to be near Huntington Central Park may have a completely different wish list.
And someone looking for a quiet residential street with a backyard may fall in love with a neighborhood they had never heard of before they started looking.
There isn't one "best neighborhood in Huntington Beach."
There's a best neighborhood for you.
Huntington Harbour Is Its Own Lifestyle
I have to include the Harbour because it's where I grew up.
Huntington Harbour is one of those places where everyday life can feel a little bit like vacation.
Boats.
Paddleboards.
Kayaks.
Duffy rides.
Walking along the water.
Watching the sunset from the Harbour.
And then you have Sunset Beach and the coast right nearby.
If being around the water is central to the way you want to live, Huntington Harbour deserves a serious look.
We Have More Outdoor Space Than People Expect
Yes, we have the Pacific Ocean.
But one of my favorite things about Huntington Beach is how many other ways there are to spend time outside.
You have Huntington Central Park, the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve, neighborhood parks, Huntington Harbour and the beach path.
You can walk through the wetlands in the morning, bike along the Pacific in the afternoon and be on a boat in Huntington Harbour that evening.
All without leaving Huntington Beach.
That's a pretty good day.
There Is a Real Local Side to Huntington Beach
Huntington Beach attracts visitors from around the world.
We host huge events.
People come here specifically to experience Surf City.
But underneath all of that, there's another Huntington Beach.
The local restaurants where you already know your order.
The coffee shops.
The neighborhood events.
The people you run into around town.
The schools, sports, clubs and community organizations.
The businesses that have been here forever.
That's the Huntington Beach you start discovering when you actually live here.
And that's the HB I've really wanted to show through Selling Surf City.
You'll Learn to Love Local Summer
Here's something you won't necessarily learn from a relocation guide.
September can be magical.
Summer crowds start thinning.
Kids head back to school.
The weather can still be gorgeous.
The beach feels a little more local again.
Around here, we call it local summer, and it's one of my favorite times of year.
After a busy Huntington Beach summer, there's something really nice about getting our town back.
You Will Also Learn About June Gloom
I can't sell you the Huntington Beach lifestyle without warning you about this one.
Your friend from another state will book a June trip expecting Southern California sunshine.
They'll wake up, look outside and ask:
"Where is the sun?"
Welcome to June Gloom.
The marine layer is part of coastal living.
Sometimes it burns off.
Sometimes it takes its time.
And eventually you learn that a gray Huntington Beach morning can turn into a beautiful afternoon.
You Don't Have to Surf to Live the Surf City Lifestyle
This might surprise people.
Surfing is a huge part of Huntington Beach's identity and history.
But you absolutely do not need to surf to love living here.
Surf City life can mean riding your beach cruiser.
Walking the pier.
Taking the dog to the beach.
Going out on the Harbour.
Watching the U.S. Open of Surfing.
Meeting friends for breakfast.
Spending an afternoon at Central Park.
Or simply rolling your windows down when you're driving along PCH.
It's a lifestyle built around being outside and close to the coast.
Some of the Best Parts Are the Ordinary Days
This is probably my answer to the original question.
Is Huntington Beach a good place to live?
For me, yes.
And it's not because every day looks like a Southern California vacation commercial.
It's because of the ordinary days.
Grabbing a breakfast burrito.
Seeing someone you know while you're out.
Taking a walk at Central Park.
Riding your bike to the beach.
Watching surfers from the Huntington Beach Pier.
Having dinner at one of your neighborhood restaurants.
Going for an evening Duffy ride.
Catching one of those incredible pink sunsets and taking yet another picture even though your phone is already full of them.
Those little things eventually become your life.
So, Is Huntington Beach Right for You?
Huntington Beach isn't going to be the right fit for everyone.
And I actually think that's important to say.
But if you love being outside, want the coast to be part of your everyday life, appreciate having distinct neighborhoods to choose from and like the idea of living somewhere that can still feel like a hometown while attracting people from around the world...
Huntington Beach is pretty hard to beat.
If you're considering moving here, my advice is simple:
Don't start with Zillow.
Start with a day in Huntington Beach.
Drive through the neighborhoods.
Walk around Downtown.
Visit Central Park.
Explore Bolsa Chica.
Drive through Huntington Harbour.
Grab lunch somewhere local.
Walk the pier.
And picture what your normal Tuesday would look like here—not just your vacation Saturday.
That's how you figure out where you belong.
That's Living in Huntington Beach 🌊
Throughout this month on Selling Surf City, I've shared some of the places, history, food and everyday experiences that make Huntington Beach home to me.
But we're really just getting started.
I'm Meghan Koshar, a Huntington Beach local and REALTOR® behind Selling Surf City.
I created this site because I don't just want to show you houses.
I want to show you Huntington Beach.
The neighborhoods.
The restaurants.
The schools.
The history.
The people.
The beach.
And all those little things you only learn after calling Surf City home.
Because when you're buying a home, you're not just buying bedrooms, bathrooms and square footage.
You're choosing the life you want to live outside the front door.
And if that life happens to include a little sand in your car...
Welcome to Huntington Beach. 🌊
