You Know You Live in Huntington Beach When… 15 Very HB Things

There are certain things you only understand after you've lived in Huntington Beach for a while.

Visitors know the pier, the beach and the surfing.

Locals know the rest.

I've lived in Huntington Beach my whole life, and there are little things about living here that are just… very HB.

So whether you were born and raised here, moved here ten years ago, or you're thinking about making Surf City home, let's see how many of these you recognize.

1. You Own a Jacket Specifically for June

Welcome to June Gloom.

Your friends from out of town planned their Southern California vacation expecting blue skies and 80 degrees.

You know better.

The good news? Sometimes the marine layer burns off by lunch.

Sometimes.

1. You Know September Is Secretly One of the Best Months of the Year

Tourists think summer ends after Labor Day.

Locals know better.

The crowds start thinning out, kids go back to school, and Huntington Beach can still give us gorgeous warm beach days.

Local summer is the best summer.

And yes, we like to keep that information to ourselves.

1. You Have Sand Somewhere in Your Car at All Times

It doesn't matter when you last went to the beach.

There is sand in your car.

You can vacuum it.

You can get the car detailed.

You can swear nobody has been to the beach in weeks.

There will still be sand.

At some point you just accept that it's part of the vehicle.

1. You Check the Marine Layer Before Making Plans

The weather app says sunny.

Your window says otherwise.

Anyone who lives near the coast knows that Huntington Beach weather can vary depending on how close you are to the ocean—and that gray morning doesn't necessarily mean a gray afternoon.

Sometimes you just have to give HB until noon.

1. You Know “The Harbour” Means Huntington Harbour

No further explanation necessary.

And if someone says they're going out on the Harbour, there's a decent chance a Duffy, paddleboard, kayak or boat is involved.

Living around Huntington Harbour has its own rhythm, especially during the summer.

It's also the part of Huntington Beach where I grew up, so it will always be particularly special to me.

1. You Have Strong Opinions About Breakfast Burritos

I don't know why breakfast burritos inspire such loyalty in Huntington Beach, but they do.

Everyone has their place.

Ask five HB locals where to get the best breakfast burrito and you may get five different answers.

I'm a Burrito Brothers on Bolsa Chica fan.

And yes, I am prepared to defend that choice.

1. You Know a Bike Can Be Better Than a Car

Especially near the beach.

There are weekends when getting on your bike is infinitely easier than trying to find parking Downtown.

Coffee, Main Street, the pier, Pacific City, the beach—you can make an entire morning out of it without moving your car.

That's one of my favorite parts about the Huntington Beach lifestyle.

1. You Still Stop for a Good Sunset

This might be my favorite one.

You can live here your entire life and still stop what you're doing because the sky suddenly turns pink.

And of course you take a picture.

Do you already have approximately 4,000 Huntington Beach sunset photos?

Probably.

Are you going to take another one tonight?

Absolutely.

1. You Know Big Event Weekends Require a Strategy

The U.S. Open of Surfing.

The Pacific Airshow.

Holiday weekends.

If you live in Huntington Beach, these aren't just events.

They're events that require logistics.

Where are you parking?

Are you biking?

What time are you leaving?

Are your friends coming over?

Do they understand that they cannot casually arrive Downtown at noon and expect to park directly in front of the pier?

Locals plan accordingly.

1. Your Friends From Out of Town Think Your Normal Saturday Is a Vacation

Coffee.

Beach walk.

Breakfast.

Bike ride.

Maybe a few hours on the Harbour.

Dinner somewhere local.

Sunset.

To someone visiting from out of town, that's an itinerary.

To us, that's Saturday.

1. You Know Huntington Beach Is Way More Than Downtown

This is something I wish more people knew before they started looking for a home here.

Huntington Beach isn't one lifestyle.

Living Downtown is completely different from living in Huntington Harbour.

The neighborhoods around Huntington Central Park have a different feel from the numbered streets.

Bolsa Chica offers another experience.

And then there are dozens of residential pockets throughout HB that visitors may never see.

That's why when someone tells me they want to move to Huntington Beach, my first question isn't necessarily what kind of house they want.

It's:

How do you want to live?

1. You Have a Favorite Local Spot Where You Already Know Your Order

This is when you know somewhere really feels like home.

You don't need the menu.

For me, there are places like Buon Gusto, where I already know we're starting with cheese bread and calamari.

Or Café Cup, where breakfast feels much more like a neighborhood morning than a tourist brunch.

Everyone has their places.

And finding yours is one of the fun parts of living here.

1. You Know the Pier Never Really Gets Old

I've seen the Huntington Beach Pier more times than I could possibly count.

And I still love it.

Walk out over the water.

Watch the surfers below.

Turn around and look back toward the coastline.

Stay for sunset.

There's a reason the pier has become the symbol of Huntington Beach.

Sometimes the touristy thing is touristy because it's actually worth doing.

1. “It's Only a Bike Ride to the Beach” Is a Legitimate Real Estate Feature

In a lot of places, buyers ask how many minutes something is by car.

In Huntington Beach, I get questions about whether you can bike to the beach.

And I completely understand why.

Being able to leave your house on a beach cruiser and end up at the ocean changes how you experience where you live.

That's why lifestyle matters so much when you're choosing an HB neighborhood.

1. Every Once in a While, You Think: We Actually Get to Live Here

This is the one.

Maybe you're walking the beach at sunset.

Maybe you're cruising through Huntington Harbour.

Maybe you're riding your bike along the coast.

Maybe the marine layer finally disappeared and it's one of those ridiculously beautiful Huntington Beach afternoons.

You look around and think:

People save all year to vacation here. And we get to call it home.

That's pretty hard to beat.
