10 Things I Love About Living in Huntington Beach
When people think of Huntington Beach, they usually think of the obvious things: the beach, the pier, surfing and that famous Surf City lifestyle.
And yes, those are all pretty great.
But as someone who was born and raised in Huntington Beach, I think what makes living here special is actually all the little things that become part of your everyday life.
The beach isn't a vacation destination. It's where you go for a walk after work. Huntington Harbour isn't somewhere you book an excursion. It's where you meet friends for a Duffy ride. And some of the best places in town aren't necessarily the places you'll find at the top of a tourist guide.
So, in honor of this month's Living in Huntington Beach theme, here are 10 things I love about calling Surf City home.
- The Beach Is Part of Everyday Life
This one sounds obvious, but living near the beach and visiting the beach are two very different things.
When you live in Huntington Beach, you don't necessarily need to plan a "beach day."
Sometimes you ride your bike down for an hour. Sometimes you walk along the water before dinner. Sometimes you stop to watch the sunset because you happen to be driving down PCH at exactly the right time.
And somehow, even after living here for years, a really good Huntington Beach sunset still deserves a picture.
- You Can Bike Almost Everywhere Near the Coast
One of my favorite ways to experience Huntington Beach is on a bike.
The beach path makes it easy to turn a normal morning into something that feels like a vacation. Grab coffee, ride along the coast, stop near the pier and keep going until you decide it's time to turn around.
If you're Downtown or in one of the nearby neighborhoods, you can easily build an entire Saturday around your bike instead of your car.
Selling Surf City Tip: If you're thinking about moving to Huntington Beach and biking to the beach is important to you, tell your REALTOR® that. "Close to the beach" and "I want to comfortably bike to the beach" can lead to very different home searches.
- Huntington Central Park Is One of HB's Best Amenities
The beach gets most of the attention, but Huntington Central Park is one of the reasons I love living here.
You can walk, run, take the dog out, visit the library, meet a friend, spend time outside or simply get away from the busier parts of town.
The neighborhoods surrounding Central Park also offer a completely different Huntington Beach lifestyle from Downtown or the Harbour.
That's something people don't always realize until they start exploring HB neighborhood by neighborhood.
- Huntington Harbour Feels Like Its Own Little Vacation
This one is especially close to my heart because I grew up in Huntington Harbour.
Boating, paddleboarding, kayaking, cruising around in a Duffy and watching the sunset from the water are simply part of life here.
And you don't necessarily have to own a waterfront home to enjoy the Harbour lifestyle.
It's one of those areas that makes you stop occasionally and think, we actually get to live here.
- There Is Always Something Going On
Huntington Beach knows how to put on an event.
The U.S. Open of Surfing is one of my favorites because there is something pretty special about seeing Huntington Beach live up to its Surf City USA name.
Then we have the Pacific Airshow, community events, beach activities, holiday traditions and plenty happening around Downtown throughout the year.
Yes, the big weekends can mean more people and traffic.
But there's also something fun about living somewhere people travel from all over to experience.
- We Have Great Little Local Spots
This is a big part of why I started Selling Surf City.
I want to talk about the places you actually go when you live here.
Maybe it's breakfast at Café Cup, a breakfast burrito from Burrito Brothers, coffee before a morning walk, or a restaurant you keep returning to because you know exactly what you're ordering before you sit down.
Those little local routines are part of what makes a city feel like home.
And I'm going to be sharing a lot more of mine here.
- Every Part of Huntington Beach Feels Different
This is probably one of the most important things to understand if you're considering moving to Huntington Beach.
There isn't one single "Huntington Beach lifestyle."
Downtown feels different from Huntington Harbour.
The neighborhoods around Central Park feel different from the numbered streets.
Sunset Beach has its own personality.
Homes near Bolsa Chica offer another experience entirely.
You can want to live in Huntington Beach and absolutely love one part of town while realizing another isn't quite right for you.
That's why I always tell buyers: choose the lifestyle first, then choose the house.
- Our Winters Are Pretty Hard to Complain About
There is something slightly ridiculous about seeing the rest of the country buried in snow while you're walking along the beach in January.
We definitely get our gray days and chilly mornings—but outdoor living doesn't disappear when summer ends.
In fact, locals know that some of the best beach days can happen after the summer crowds are gone.
And then there's local summer—that stretch when the crowds thin out, the weather is still beautiful and Huntington Beach feels a little more like ours again.
- You Don't Have to Be a Surfer to Live the Surf City Lifestyle
I think this is worth saying.
Living in Surf City doesn't mean you need a surfboard permanently attached to the roof of your car.
The Huntington Beach lifestyle is bigger than surfing.
It's being outside.
It's biking.
It's boating.
It's beach walks.
It's meeting friends for breakfast.
It's bringing your dog along.
It's watching the sunset.
It's having sand somewhere in your car no matter how often you clean it.
You can embrace Surf City without ever catching a wave.
- It Still Feels Like Home
This is the biggest one for me.
I've watched Huntington Beach change over the years, but there are still moments when it feels like the same hometown I grew up in.
You run into people you know.
You have your favorite places.
You know the shortcuts.
You know which events you're excited about every year.
You know that June might not actually be the month to promise your visitors sunshine every morning.
And you know there are certain evenings when you should drop whatever you're doing and go watch the sunset.
That's the Huntington Beach I want to share through Selling Surf City.
Thinking About Living in Huntington Beach?
If you're considering moving to Huntington Beach, don't just look at bedrooms, bathrooms and square footage.
Think about how you want your life here to look.
Do you picture walking to the beach?
Do you want to keep a boat behind your house?
Would you rather have a backyard and a quiet residential street?
Do you want to bike Downtown?
Would you love being near Central Park?
Those answers can tell us just as much about where you should live as your real estate wish list.
I'm Meghan Koshar, a Huntington Beach local and REALTOR® behind Selling Surf City, and I'm using this blog to share the Huntington Beach I know—from real estate and neighborhoods to restaurants, schools, events and everyday local life.
Because Selling Surf City isn't just about selling homes. It's about selling the lifestyle that comes with them.
Welcome to Huntington Beach. 🌊
