I've lived in Huntington Beach my whole life, and one thing I've learned is that the best brunch spot really depends on the kind of morning you're after.

So, if you're wondering where to grab breakfast or brunch in Huntington Beach, here are a few of my local picks.

For the Classic Huntington Beach Breakfast

If you want an old-school Huntington Beach breakfast, Sugar Shack Café on Main Street is about as HB as it gets.

It's a longtime local favorite right in the heart of Downtown Huntington Beach, and it's exactly the kind of place that feels like Surf City.

This is where I'd go if you want breakfast followed by a walk down Main Street and out onto the Huntington Beach Pier. It's casual, laid-back and quintessential Huntington Beach.

For the Breakfast Burrito

If you're craving a breakfast burrito, Burrito Brothers on Bolsa Chica is one of my Huntington Beach picks.

This is the kind of local spot that doesn't need an ocean view or a trendy brunch patio. You go for the burrito.

It's casual, easy and exactly the kind of place you want to know about when you actually live in Huntington Beach rather than just visit for the weekend.

Grab your burrito, take it down to the beach, and eat it with the windows down or your feet in the sand.

That's a pretty perfect Surf City breakfast.

For a Local Breakfast Away From Downtown

Another spot worth knowing is Café Cup on Warner Avenue.

This is a great option when you want a proper sit-down breakfast without dealing with the Downtown Huntington Beach weekend crowds.

The menu goes well beyond the basics, with omelets, scrambles, French toast, Benedicts and plenty of hearty breakfast options.

It's one of those neighborhood breakfast spots that's especially nice to have in your back pocket when you want a relaxed morning without making an entire event out of brunch.

For Brunch With an Ocean View

When friends or family are visiting Huntington Beach, Pacific City is an easy choice when you want brunch with a view.

You're right across from the ocean, there are several restaurants to choose from, and you can turn brunch into an entire Huntington Beach morning.

Eat, grab a coffee, walk across PCH to the beach and head down toward the Huntington Beach Pier.

If you're eating somewhere with patio seating, ask for a table outside. On a clear Huntington Beach morning, it's hard to beat.

And yes, you may wait a little longer for that ocean-view table—but sometimes that's the whole point.

How to Beat the Huntington Beach Brunch Crowd

A few things I've learned about weekend brunch in HB:

Go early. Huntington Beach is a completely different place at 8:30 a.m. than it is at 10:30 a.m. on a sunny Saturday. Try Friday brunch. One of the underrated perks of living here is being able to enjoy some of these places before the weekend crowds arrive. Park once Downtown. If you're brunching near Main Street or Pacific City, park and walk. You'll enjoy yourself much more than circling the numbered streets looking for another space. Make a morning of it. Coffee, brunch, the pier and a walk along the beach are all close enough that there's no reason to rush. Where I'd Send a First-Time Visitor

If someone were visiting Huntington Beach for the first time, I'd tell them to start with coffee Downtown, walk out onto the Huntington Beach Pier, explore Main Street and then settle in for brunch once the marine layer starts to burn off.

That gives you a little taste of everything that makes Surf City special.

But if you want a more casual local morning?

Grab a breakfast burrito from Burrito Brothers on Bolsa Chica and take it down to the beach.

No reservations. No complicated plans. Just breakfast and the Pacific Ocean.
