If you're considering moving to Huntington Beach and Ocean View High School is part of your search, this is a school you'll want to dig a little deeper into.

Located at 17071 Gothard Street in Huntington Beach, Ocean View High School—home of the Seahawks—is one of the public high schools within the Huntington Beach Union High School District.

And while location and school boundaries are obviously important when you're house hunting, there's much more families should know about Ocean View.

From its International Baccalaureate program and longtime Business Academy to AVID, career education, athletics and other specialized programs, Ocean View offers several different paths students can explore.

So let's take a closer look at Ocean View High School in Huntington Beach and what families should know if they're considering moving nearby.

Ocean View High School at a Glance

Here are a few quick facts:

  • School: Ocean View High School
  • Grades: 9–12
  • Type: Public high school
  • District: Huntington Beach Union High School District
  • Address: 17071 Gothard Street, Huntington Beach, CA 92647
  • Current Enrollment: Approximately 1,042 students
  • Mascot: Seahawks

Ocean View is located in the north-central portion of Huntington Beach.

From a real estate perspective, that location is interesting because you're relatively close to several different parts of HB—including Huntington Central Park, Bolsa Chica and the northern side of the city.

One of Ocean View's Standout Programs: International Baccalaureate

One of the first things families researching Ocean View may come across is its International Baccalaureate program, commonly known as IB.

IB is an internationally recognized academic program that can provide students with a rigorous, structured course of study.

Ocean View offers information specifically for students considering the IB Diploma Program, including course sequences, course descriptions and guidance explaining the differences between AP and IB.

For a student who enjoys challenging academics and is interested in the IB pathway, this is definitely something I would explore directly with the school.

And if IB is one of the primary reasons you're considering Ocean View, don't simply assume your student will automatically participate.

Talk with the school about current eligibility, course sequencing and program requirements before making decisions based on the program.

Ocean View Also Has a Longstanding Business Academy

This is another program I think prospective families should know about.

Ocean View's Business Academy has been operating for more than 30 years.

The school describes it as a three-year program taken in addition to a student's regular high school coursework.

Students in the Business Academy can participate in business-focused classes along with experiences such as:

Mentorship

College coursework

Workplace experience

Community service

Career speakers

Field trips

Portfolio development

and workplace-skills training.

Students currently apply during their freshman year to begin the three-year program.

For a teenager who's already showing an interest in entrepreneurship, business, marketing or a related career, this is absolutely a program worth researching.

AVID and College Preparation

Ocean View also offers AVID, a four-year college-preparatory elective designed to support students with college aspirations.

The program focuses on academic skills while also exposing students to college research, campus visits, volunteering and other experiences.

As students progress through AVID, the program emphasizes things such as maintaining a college-ready GPA, researching universities, taking challenging coursework and preparing for the transition after high school.

For families thinking ahead to college, I'd put this on your list of programs to ask about when visiting Ocean View.

Career & Technical Education

Not every student's path after high school looks the same—and I think that's important.

Ocean View also offers Career and Technical Education, commonly referred to as CTE.

CTE can give students opportunities to explore potential careers and develop practical skills while they're still in high school.

Ocean View's program resources include career exploration and industry-certification information, and the school highlights areas such as automotive, culinary arts and business among its program offerings.

If your student already has an interest in a particular career field, ask the school what current pathways are available and how students enter them.

Spanish Dual Language Immersion

Another program prospective families may want to know about is Ocean View's Spanish Dual Language Immersion program.

The program is designed to develop bilingualism and biliteracy in English and Spanish while students complete academic coursework.

Ocean View currently describes the program around three primary goals:

Bilingualism and biliteracy

High academic achievement

Sociocultural competence

Students may take Spanish courses along with additional academic classes taught in Spanish.

The program also provides students with a pathway toward potentially earning the California State Seal of Biliteracy upon graduation.

If your student is currently in a dual-language program at the elementary or middle-school level, this could be an especially important program to investigate.

Ocean View Offers More Than Traditional Academics

One thing I like about looking through Ocean View's programs is the variety.

The school's program information also highlights areas including:

Automotive

Culinary Arts

Photography

Visual Arts

Science

World Languages

ROP programs

IB History and Model United Nations

and other opportunities.

That's why I always encourage families not to judge a high school based on a single number or ranking.

Look at the student standing in front of you.

What are they interested in?

What motivates them?

What programs would they actually use?

A school that provides the right opportunities for one student may look completely different from the right school for another.

Athletics and Seahawk Pride

Athletics are another part of student life at Ocean View.

The school currently offers sports including football, basketball, soccer, baseball, softball, volleyball, water polo, swimming, tennis, golf, wrestling, track, cross country and others.

There are boys' and girls' programs across multiple seasons.

If your student is serious about a particular sport, I'd recommend researching the current team directly.

Ask about:

Tryouts

Levels offered

Summer programs

Coaching contacts

Schedules

and participation requirements.

Those details matter much more than simply seeing the sport listed on a website.

Student Life at Ocean View

High school isn't only about academics.

Ocean View has clubs, athletics, activities, campus events and programs that give students different ways to become involved.

And I think this is one of the most overlooked pieces of researching a school.

When you tour a campus with your teenager, ask:

"Can you picture yourself here?"

Can they see themselves joining something?

Do any of the programs excite them?

Would they participate in athletics, business, IB, AVID, arts, Model UN or another activity?

Those are important questions.

What Is It Like Living Near Ocean View High School?

Now let's talk about the Huntington Beach side of the equation.

Ocean View is located on Gothard Street in north-central Huntington Beach.

This part of town offers a different lifestyle from Downtown Huntington Beach or the neighborhoods immediately along the coast.

Depending on exactly where you live, you're within relatively easy reach of:

Huntington Central Park

Bolsa Chica

Huntington Harbour

The beach

Bella Terra and nearby shopping

and established residential neighborhoods throughout northern Huntington Beach.

For someone relocating from outside HB, this is something I really want you to understand:

Huntington Beach isn't one single neighborhood or lifestyle.

Where you live within the city can dramatically change your everyday experience.

Huntington Central Park Is a Major Lifestyle Bonus

One of my favorite amenities in this part of Huntington Beach is Huntington Central Park.

It's one of those places locals actually use.

Walking.

Running.

Taking the dog out.

Going to the library.

Meeting friends.

Spending time outside.

If your family enjoys having a large park nearby, proximity to Central Park is something I'd absolutely consider when you're comparing neighborhoods around this part of Huntington Beach.

You're Still Close to the Coast

Living farther inland doesn't mean giving up the Huntington Beach lifestyle.

That's something I think buyers sometimes overlook.

You don't need to see the ocean from your front window to have the beach become part of your everyday life.

From many neighborhoods in this portion of Huntington Beach, you can still make the beach, Bolsa Chica and Huntington Harbour part of your routine.

And sometimes living a little farther inland can give buyers different housing options than they'll find immediately along the coast.

What Kinds of Homes Are Near Ocean View High School?

The areas surrounding Ocean View include a variety of established Huntington Beach neighborhoods.

Depending on where you're looking, you'll find:

Single-family homes

Townhomes

Condominiums

Established residential streets

and different home styles and lot sizes.

But here's where I always caution buyers:

Don't simply search for "homes near Ocean View High School."

A home being physically close to the school does not necessarily mean that property is assigned to Ocean View.

Buying for Ocean View High School? Verify the Exact Address

This is probably the most important real estate information in this article.

Do not assume a Huntington Beach address—or even a home located near Ocean View High School—is automatically assigned to Ocean View.

Ocean View is one of multiple public high schools within the Huntington Beach Union High School District.

School attendance boundaries can also change.

If Ocean View is important to your home purchase, verify the exact property address directly with the Huntington Beach Union High School District before buying or leasing.

Selling Surf City Tip: Don't rely solely on the school information displayed on Zillow, Redfin or a real estate listing. If a specific school matters to your family, verify the address directly with the district.

Don't Buy a Home Assuming You'll Get a Transfer

Families sometimes ask whether they can simply transfer into a particular Huntington Beach high school.

There may be transfer options within the district, but policies, eligibility and space availability can change.

That's why I would never recommend buying a house based on the assumption that a future transfer will be approved.

If attending Ocean View is important to your family, speak directly with the district about current enrollment and transfer procedures before making the real estate decision.

Questions to Ask Before Moving for Ocean View High School

If Ocean View is part of your Huntington Beach home search, here are some questions I'd research:

Is the exact home address currently assigned to Ocean View High School?

Is my student interested in the International Baccalaureate program?

Would the Business Academy be a good fit?

Does my student qualify for or want to participate in Spanish Dual Language Immersion?

What AVID opportunities are available?

Which current CTE pathways match my student's interests?

What athletics, arts and clubs would my student actually participate in?

How will my student get to and from school?

And then ask yourself some questions about your family:

How close do we want to be to the beach?

Would we use Huntington Central Park?

Do we want to be closer to Bolsa Chica or Huntington Harbour?

What kind of neighborhood do we want?

What do we want our weekends in Huntington Beach to look like?

Because choosing a school and choosing a home shouldn't happen separately.

School Rankings Aren't the Whole Story

If you're researching Huntington Beach schools online, you're inevitably going to find rankings and ratings.

They can provide information.

But I don't think they tell you everything you need to know about whether a school is right for your child.

Look at the programs.

Visit the campus.

Talk to the school.

Research the classes your child would actually take.

Look at athletics and extracurricular activities.

Understand the commute.

And think about the student themselves.

The right question isn't simply "Is this a good school?"

It's:

"Is this the right school and community for my child and my family?"

That's a much more useful question.
